Indigenous-led AI for the classroom.

A community-governed platform that bridges local knowledge with AI literacy — built on sovereign infrastructure, under community control.

Platform architecture
The foundation of every tool is a community-curated knowledge base and a data governance policy — together, they're what every classroom tool below has to answer to. Launch the demo to see them working.

What our education platform offers

Portage is an AI platform for educators, built on sovereign infrastructure under community control. Our adaptive teaching tools are anchored by a community-governed data layer, so every interaction respects local protocol and stays within your jurisdiction.

We start with K–12 because that’s where the need is most urgent — and because it mirrors the priority set by Canada’s new National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, AI for All, released in June 2026. But nothing in the design is limited to youth: the same governed infrastructure extends to adult and community learning whenever a community chooses to bring it there.

AI Teaching Assistant
Answers grounded only in what the community has chosen to share.
What this means
The protocol
It can only read pages the community has reviewed and marked public. Restricted knowledge is never loaded into it — it cannot repeat what it was never given.
What we offer
A chat assistant that helps teachers plan lessons and answer questions, grounded in your community’s approved knowledge and citing its sources.
The tech
The full approved knowledge base is given to the model as context (no hidden retrieval), sealed with an integrity hash and rebuilt only from human-approved content.
Intelligent Tutoring
1:1 pacing that adapts to each learner, without leaving the jurisdiction.
What this means
The protocol
Runs inside your jurisdiction; a learner’s progress and data never leave community infrastructure.
What we offer
One-to-one tutoring that adapts pace and approach to each student.
The tech
Per-learner progress modelling and adaptive sequencing, served from community-hosted models.
AI-Driven Lesson Creation
Build curriculum in minutes, reviewed against your protocols.
What this means
The protocol
Every generated lesson passes through your governance policy and human review before it can be used or teach anything.
What we offer
Curriculum-aligned lessons, quizzes and activities drafted in minutes.
The tech
Structured generation templated to your standards, with a review gate between draft and use.
Adaptive Learning Courses
Full courses that scale what already works in your classroom.
What this means
The protocol
Course material is built only from knowledge your community has approved.
What we offer
Full multi-lesson courses that scale what’s already working in your classrooms.
The tech
Sequenced modules with mastery tracking, assembled from approved community content.
Why it matters

The need for Indigenous AI literacy

AI literacy empowers students and teachers to understand how AI systems work, critically evaluate their opportunities and risks, and use them responsibly. To fully realize this potential, we must address the barriers preventing our schools from taking control of their own technological future:

  • No shared understanding of AI literacy, or how to teach it, within our communities.
  • Inconsistent adoption across schools and systems that fail to respect our governance.
  • Anxiety fueled by models that do not understand our people or our stories.
  • Limited understanding of how to use AI on our own terms.
The Four Principles
O
Own Your Knowledge
Community data stays community property — collection to classroom.
P
Set the Protocols
Your governance policy is the rulebook every tool must obey.
L
Keep Data Local
Sovereign infrastructure inside your own jurisdiction.
S
Scale the Learning
Grow from one classroom to a whole education system on your terms.

Who it's for

Who is this framework for?

Teachers & Educators
Access to AI teaching tools that protect local knowledge and respect cultural protocols.
School & System Leaders
Scalable infrastructure that ensures data sovereignty and aligns technology with community governance.
Education Policymakers
A structured, AI-assisted path to draft and enforce policy that honors Indigenous self-determination.
Parents, Families & Caregivers
A safe, reliable way for youth to engage with traditional stories and language that remain under community protection.
Governance & onboarding, built in

Nothing runs on Portage until the community that owns the data has signed off — at every step.

New clients receive out-of-the-box Indigenous Data Governance frameworks — OCAP, OCAS, and CARE — with an optional bespoke Governance Policy Consultation: an AI-assisted process that asks the right questions so your community can think through what matters most. Whatever you land on becomes the rulebook every other part of the system has to obey.

Community Opts In
A Nation or organization signs on and defines what's in scope.
Protocols Are Set
OCAP, OCAS & CARE apply by default, or a bespoke policy is ratified.
Tools Operate Within It
Every tool queries only what the protocol allows — nothing more.
Community Reviews
Ongoing sign-off — access can be narrowed or revoked at any time.
Based on international frameworks

Grounded in global frameworks.
Rooted in Indigenous sovereignty.

Portage is grounded in internationally recognized approaches to AI literacy — including the public frameworks of the European Commission and the OECD — and extends them with the layer missing everywhere else: Indigenous self-determination. We're an independent initiative, unaffiliated with these bodies, building a future where young people gain the AI literacy they need without ever leaving behind who they are.

The impact we're building toward

“AI is coming to our classrooms whether we're ready or not — and right now, neither our kids nor our teachers are. My worry was never that we'd fall behind; it was that we'd catch up by trading away who we are. Portage is the first thing I've seen that could give our students the AI literacy they urgently need while protecting the cultures that literacy is meant to serve.”

Kirsten Lang
Indigenous Guidance Counsellor, British Columbia

No AI in Portage can read an unapproved contribution or publish anything — not because we ask it nicely, but because it doesn’t hold the keys.

Looking forward

We haven't partnered with a community yet — we're building this so we can.

If you lead a Nation, school, or organization and want a hand in shaping what this becomes — from governance to curriculum — we'd welcome the conversation.
